Health Summary for Hackney LB

Overall, the health of people living in Hackney is worse than the England average. Levels of drug misuse and violent crime are amongst the worst in England. However, rates of breast feeding initiation and smoking in pregnancy are better than the national average.
Almost 90 per cent of people living in Hackney live in an area classified as being within the bottom fifth of the most deprived areas in England - the highest proportion in the country. Life expectancy for those living in these deprived areas is lower compared to the ten per cent living in the less deprived areas.
Over the last ten years, rates of deaths from all causes combined, early deaths from cancer and early deaths from heart disease and stroke have decreased, but have remained higher than the England average.
Amongst children, the level of poverty, prevalence of obesity, incidence of teenage pregnancy, achievement in GCSEs, and physical activity are all worse than the England average.
The average deprivation score for Hackney makes it the second most deprived borough in the country.
The Hackney Local Area Agreement has prioritised tackling worklessness, raising educational standards, providing better housing, building safer communities, and promoting greater health and wellbeing.
