The HIA of the “Streetcar” Bus Rapid Transport Scheme was commissioned to support the business case for the funding of the Scheme planned for 2014. The HIA focused on the bus scheme planned to run from the North to the south of the Stoke-on-Trent conurbation and connect with key town centres, regeneration centres and other key sectors. The aim of the scheme is to support regeneration as well as encouraging a modal shift from car use to public transport.
The HIA found that the scheme would have mainly positive health impacts with likely minor impacts restricted to the implementation phases of the scheme. Recommendations related to the design of the buses, the street furniture, integration with travel plans of employers, links with marketing campaigns and specific measures for the implementation phase.
