Environmental impact of off-license premises (AERC) Environmental impact of off-license premises (AERC)
An investigation into the environmental impact of off-license premises on residential neighbourhoods. Produced by Alasdair J. M. Forsyth, Neil Davidson* and Jemma C. Lennox, Glasgow Caledonian University (2007).This research focuses on off-sales premises (licensed convenience stores), located in residential neighbourhoods and the impact of alcohol- related physical incivilities (e.g. broken bottles) within the communities which they serve. The report concludes that the environmental impact of an off-sales outlet would appear to be more a function of local area deprivation than of the marketing practices of shopkeepers or irresponsible sales by shop servers. In contrast to the views of some stakeholders, these individuals are themselves in the front-line of dealing with alcohol-related incivility.

Shop servers’ experience of alcohol-related issues (AR UK) Shop servers’ experience of alcohol-related issues (AR UK)
Shop servers’ experience of alcohol-related issues and interventions in socially contrasting neighbourhoods, July 2012. Produced by Davidson, N. Forsyth, A. & Ellaway, A. funded by Alcohol Research UK. Alcohol problems are concentrated in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. In recent times there has been a shift in alcohol consumer patterns across the UK away from the on-trade (pubs) towards the off-trade sector (licensed shops). Off-trade purchase is cheaper (incurring more health problems, especially amongst disadvantaged groups), and its consumption is largely unsupervised (risking more serious disorder). This project, which built upon an AERC-funded pilot study (Forsyth et al, 2007), addressed these issues via an overlooked group of experts/stakeholders, namely off-sales servers (shopkeepers) working in local licensed stores in socially contrasting neighbourhoods. Alcohol Research UK; University of Glasgow; Glasgow Caledonian University

This research has attempted to review the evidence linking the environment to health outcomes/behaviour change and also compile examples of best practice from other local authorities in UK. The research report is a comprehensive review of current planning policy, evidence & opportunities. The workshop report summarises the discussions based on this document.
