KEYNOTES:
The health of people living in Kent is generally better than the England average. Life expectancy is above average; rates of early death from heart disease and stroke and from cancer are below average and continue to improve. Levels of drug misuse and statutory homelessness are better than average.
There are health inequalities within Kent. Swale and Thanet have the highest proportions of people living in deprived neighbourhoods. Swale has a lower life expectancy for women and Thanet for both men and women when compared to the England average.
Children in Kent experience lower rates of poverty and are more likely to attain 5 good GCSEs than the average for England. Rates of childhood obesity and tooth decay are better than the England average, although 9% of Reception year children can be classified as obese. Levels of physical activity in children are worse than the England average.
Rates of smoking in pregnancy and breast feeding initiation remain worse than the average for England. Smoking accounts for nearly 2,300 deaths per year in Kent. The rate of hospital stays for alcohol-related harm is better than the England average with over 20,000 hospital admissions for alcohol harm per year.
The Kent Local Area Agreement has prioritised increasing adult participation in sport and increasing the numbers of drug users in effective drug treatment.
