In general, the health of people in Bexley is better than the England average. For example, life expectancy for both sexes is higher than average, the level of drug misuse and hospital stays for alcohol-related harm are lower than average. However, the number of adults who smoke and the proportion of people diagnosed with diabetes are higher than average.The level of physical activity among adults is lower than average.
Life expectancy for males living in the most deprived areas of Bexley is six and a half years less than for those living in the least deprived areas. For females, the difference is over four and a half years between those in the most and the least deprived areas.
Over the last ten years, death rates from all causes combined, and early deaths from heart disease and stroke have improved and remain better than the England average. The rate of early deaths from cancer has also fallen and is now similar to the national average.
Levels of child poverty, GCSE achievement and teenage pregnancy are better in Bexley than the average for England.
Bexley's Joint Strategic Needs Assessment has identified smoking rates, alcohol consumption, obesity and low levels of physical activity as key priority areas for action to maintain improvements in health.
