The health of the population in Brent shows some variation when compared with the Engand average. For example, life expectancy for both sexes, and rates of smoking in pregnancy and hip fractures in the over 65s are all better than the England average. However, the level of drug misuse and new cases of tuberculosis are higher than average. The percentage of people diagnosed with diabetes is the highest in England.
The percentage of children eligible for free school meals is highest in the Black ethnic group in Brent. Men living in the most deprived areas have a shorter life expectancy than those living in less deprived areas.
Over the last ten years, death rates from all causes combined and early deaths from cancer have improved and remain lower than for England. Although early death rates from heart disease and stroke have fallen, they remain higher than the England average.
Among children, levels of poverty, physical activity and tooth decay at age five are worse than the England average.
