KEYNOTES:
The health of people in Lewisham is generally worse than the England average. For example, life expectancy for both sexes and the death rate from smoking are worse than the England average.
Almost 40 per cent of Lewisham residents live in areas classified as being amongst the fifth most deprived areas in England. Life expectancy is lower in these areas than in other less deprived parts of the borough.
Over the past ten years, rates of death from all causes combined, and early deaths (under 75 years old) from cancer and from heart disease and stroke have all improved. However, all remain worse than the England average.
Lewisham has better than average levels of smoking in pregnancy and breast feeding initiation.
The teenage pregnancy rate in Lewisham is one of the highest in England.
Lewisham has higher rates of drug misuse and of hospital admissions for alcohol-related harm than the England average. The violent crime rate is higher then the England average. Lewisham also has a higher proportion of people on incapacity benefits for mental illness than the England average.
