KEYNOTES:
The health of people in Swindon is similar to the England average. The rates of hospital admissions for alcohol-related harm and levels of children in poverty appear lower than the England average while estimated rates of smoking in adults and rates of death from smoking appear higher than in England as a whole.
Deprivation levels are lower than the England average, however some areas in Swindon are among the most deprived fifth in England.
Over the last ten years early death rates from heart disease and stroke and from cancer have generally been declining along with the England average. However, in 2005-07, early death rates from heart disease and stroke were higher in Swindon than the England average.
GCSE achievement and rates of physical activity among children are lower than the England average and the proportion of children who are obese is similar to the proportion in England as a whole.
Rates of teenage pregnancy in Swindon appear higher than in England as a whole.
NHS Swindon have prioritised tackling teenage pregnancy, obesity in adults and children and alcohol related harm, as well as the provision of Chlamydia screening and stop-smoking services.
