KEYNOTES:
The health of the people in Luton is generally worse than the England average. For example, life expectancy, and deaths from smoking, heart disease and stroke are worse than the England average.
There are inequalities within Luton by location, gender, deprivation and ethnicity. For example, men from the most deprived areas die, on average, nearly 8 years earlier than those in the least deprived areas. For women, the difference is over 6 years.
Over the last ten years, rates of deaths from all causes, and early deaths from heart disease and stroke have been higher than the England average. This gap has widened for deaths from all causes in women.
Compared with last year, the teenage pregnancy rate has improved and is now significantly better than the England average. However, smoking in pregnancy and GCSE attainment are worse than the England average.
Luton has a range of social issues such as homelessness, deprivation and child poverty, that impact on health.
Health inequalities are a major issue in Luton and NHS Luton has prioritised reducing the life expectancy gap. The PCT is focusing on the main causes of early death: heart disease, stroke, diabetes and smoking, together with targeting the places with lowest life expectancy.
