KEYNOTES:
The health of people in West Berkshire is generally better than, and deprivation levels are lower than, the England average. Most health and lifestyle indicators are similar to or better than the England average.
There are health inequalities within West Berkshire by deprivation and ethnicity. For example, life expectancy for men from more deprived local areas is 7 years lower than for those from less deprived areas. A higher proportion of children from the Mixed ethnic group are eligible for free school meals compared to other ethnic groups in West Berkshire.
Over the last ten years, the death rate from all causes combined and the early death rate from heart disease and stroke have improved and remain better the national average. The early death rate from cancer has also fallen and is similar to the England average.
Many health indicators for children and young people are better than the England average, including physical activity levels in school age children, tooth decay, GCSE achievement and teenage pregnancy. However, there are over 3,000 children living in poverty and around 1,200 children eligible for free school meals.
Priorities for action in the Local Area Agreement include tackling obesity in school age children, admissions for alcohol related harm, early mortality from circulatory diseases and addressing the achievement gap in children.
