KEYNOTES:
The health of people in Crewe and Nantwich is varied. A number of indicators are similar to the England average, such as the estimated percentage of adults who smoke and infant deaths. However, some indicators are significantly better, such as children in poverty, while others are significantly worse, such as the estimated percentage of adults who binge drink.
There are health inequalities by gender, level of deprivation and ethnicity. For example, men from the most deprived areas have over five years shorter life expectancy than men from the least deprived areas. Women from the most deprived areas live over two years less than those from the least deprived areas.
Over the last ten years, the death rate from all causes for women and the early death rates from cancer as well as heart disease and stroke have decreased, but not as much as the England averages. The gaps between the Crewe and Nantwich and England rates are now wider than before.
The rate of hospital stays related to alcohol is significantly worse than the England average.
Within the Local Delivery Plan alcohol is identified as a priority, including the review of alcohol services and the introduction of screening and brief intervention in primary care.
The Cheshire Annual Public Health Report and strategic needs assessments provide further detail on the health of this area and can be found at www.cecpct.nhs.uk and www.wcheshirepct.nhs.uk
