KEYNOTES:
The health of people living in North Devon is generally better than the England average. The rate of people claiming incapacity benefits for mental illness is above the average for England as a whole.
Deprivation levels are lower than the England average, however some areas in North Devon are among the most deprived in England and inequalities exist in relation to deprivation. Men living in the least deprived areas can expect to live about nine years longer than those living in the most deprived areas.
Over the last ten years death rates from all causes combined and early death rates from heart disease and stroke have been declining in line with England.
The proportion of physically active children is higher than the England average while rates of obesity among children are similar to England as a whole.
While the number of adults who binge drink is lower than the England average, the number of hospital stays for alcohol related harm are higher than the rates for England.
The number of people diagnosed with diabetes is also higher than the England average.
North Devon has some of highest levels of deprivation across Devon and there are significant issues around mental health, drug and alcohol misuse in certain areas of the district.
