In general the health of people living in Eastbourne is similar to the average for England, with similar life expectancy and early deaths from cancer. Rates of violent crime are high. Early deaths from heart disease and stroke are better than the England average and continue to improve.
There are inequalities in health within Eastbourne. Life expectancy in men from the most deprived areas is 11 years lower than in those from the least deprived areas.
There are 3,850 children living in poverty in Eastbourne and GCSE attainment is lower than the England average. The rate of childhood obesity is similar to the England average and the level of physical activity in children is better.
Compared to the England average, the rate of teenage pregnancy is worse, smoking in pregnancy is similar and the rate of breast feeding initiation is better.
Smoking accounts for 190 deaths per year in Eastbourne. The rate of hospital stays for alcohol- related harm is worse than the England average, with nearly 2,400 such stays per year.
The Local Area Agreement sets out the key priorities over the next three years and the East Sussex Integrated Sustainable Community Strategy sets out a shared vision for East Sussex in 2026 www.essp.org.uk
