KEYNOTES:
The health of the people of St Albans is generally better than the England average. However, road injuries and deaths appear significantly worse than the England average; and smoking in pregnancy, physically active adults, hip fracture in the over 65s and excess winter deaths are similar to the England average.
There are inequalities within St Albans by location, gender, deprivation and ethnicity. For example, men from the least deprived areas in St Albans can expect to live nearly 8 years longer than those from the more deprived areas. For women the difference is nearly 6 years.
Over the past ten years, rates of deaths from all causes, early deaths from cancer and early deaths from heart disease and stroke have improved for men and women and are better than the England average.
Compared with last year, obesity in Reception age children is now significantly better than the England average and physical activity in school children is also better than the England average. However, almost 1 in 7 women smokes during pregnancy.
Health priorities include reducing smoking prevalence, childhood and adult obesity and alcohol misuse.
