KEYNOTES:
The health of people in Dartford is generally close to the England average. Levels of drug misuse, hospital stays for alcohol related harm and incapacity benefits for mental illness are all lower than the national average. However, levels of violent crime, smoking in adults and statutory homelessness are all higher than the England average.
There are considerable health inequalities within Dartford. Life expectancy is more than eight years less for men living in the most deprived areas than for those in the least deprived areas.
Over the last ten years, the rate of death from all causes combined, and the rate of early deaths from heart disease and stroke have fallen, and are currently similar to the England average. The rate of early deaths from cancer is lower than the national average.
The health of children is generally better than the national average. The estimated rate of physical activity in children is higher than the national average and the rate of tooth decay is lower. GCSE attainment and the breast feeding initiation rate are both above average. However, one in ten children in Reception year can be classified as obese.
West Kent PCT has prioritised reducing the prevalence of smoking, cancer screening, childhood immunisation and weight management.
