The health of people in Gravesham is generally close to the England average. Levels of statutory homelessness and the percentage of people diagnosed with diabetes are higher than the national average. However, the rate of road injury and death, drug misuse and hospital stays for alcohol related harm are all lower than the national average.
There are health inequalities within Gravesham. Life expectancy for men from the most deprived areas is over six years lower than for those from the least deprived areas; the gap is five years for women.
Over the last ten years the rates of death from all causes combined and of early death from heart disease and stroke have fallen and are similar to England.
The health of children in Gravesham is generally similar to or better than the national average. Around 1 in 5 children live in poverty, which is below the national average, and the infant mortality rate is among the lowest in the country. The percentage of children who are physically active is below the national average.
The Kent-wide Local Area Agreement has prioritised adult participation in sport, tackling serious violent crime, independence in older people and reducing road injuries and deaths. West Kent PCT has prioritised reducing smoking prevalence, cancer screening, childhood immunisation and weight management.
