KEYNOTES:
Health and deprivation in Wansbeck are generally worse than for England as a whole. Deaths from smoking and rates of early deaths from heart disease and stroke and from cancer appear worse than the averages for England. On average, smoking kills about 150 people each year in Wansbeck.
Men and women from the least deprived areas of Wansbeck can expect to live longer than men and women from the most deprived areas: about four years longer for men and about three years longer for women.
Over the last ten years, death rates from all causes have decreased for men and women, though the rate for women has decreased at a much slower rate. Rates of early deaths from heart disease and stroke and from cancer have dropped over the last ten years, but these rates remain above the averages for England.
Rates of breast feeding initiation and smoking in pregnancy are worse than the England averages.
The percentage of children who achieve at least five A* to C grade GCSEs and the percentage of children spending at least two hours per week on school sport are lower than the averages for England.
Local priorities include improving the health of children and preventing avoidable deaths in middle age from heart disease and stroke.
