KEYNOTES:
The health of people in Surrey Heath is generally better than the England average. Life expectancy is high, and rates of early death from cancer and from heart disease and stroke are lower than average.
There are health inequalities in Surrey Heath. Male life expectancy in more deprived areas of the district is five years lower than in less deprived areas.
Over the last ten years, rates of early death from cancer and from heart disease and stroke have fallen.
Both the teenage pregnancy rate and percentage of mothers smoking in pregnancy are low. Breastfeeding levels are high, but the percentage of physically active children is below average. Child poverty is low overall but over 1,400 children live in low income households.
Healthy eating levels in Surrey Heath are high, although it is estimated that nearly 1 in 5 adults are obese. Hospital stays related to alcohol are low, but more than 1 in 7 binge drink. Nearly 1 in 5 adults are estimated to smoke and while the death rate is below the England average, smoking accounts for nearly 100 deaths each year.
Priorities for action identified in the Local Area Agreement for Surrey include hospital admissions for alcohol-related harm, childhood obesity, smoking, social care and teenage pregnancy.
