The HIA Gateway has become part of Public Health England, joining its Knowledge and Intelligence Team (West Midlands) but remains a national and international service (see below for more details). PHE is an executive agency of the Department of Health, England. The HIA Gateway provides access to resources and information on Health Impact Assessment (HIA) for those new to HIA, practitioners of HIA and those wishing to commission HIAs or some other Impact Assessment process (i.e. Integrated Impact Assessment, Mental Well-being Impact Assessment and health-related Strategic Environmental Assessment).

13th HIA 2013 International Conference – Geneva, Switzerland, 2-4 October 2013
The 13th International HIA Conference will explore the implementation processes leading through HIA towards Health in All Policies. Focus will be on HIA practice and quality, ethics and values, HIA for Health in All Policies, and new challenges. A pre-conference Introductory Workshop on HIA will be held on 2nd October. Abstract submission date is 31st May 2013. For more details see the conference website.
HIA Gateway update
The HIA Gateway is now part of PHE and will be accessible from the PHE portal in the near future (this will be on the Government (England) website under "Topic-Public Health"). In the meantime you can access the site using existing URLs or via a search engine (this access will remain). The term "HIA Gateway" will stay but may become "PHE HIA Gateway". The future of this website is now secure.

ESRC Seminar 3: New modelling methods: what can qualitative data offer?
This is the 3rd seminar organised by the ESRCs in their series: Modelling on the Move: Towards Transport System Transitions? This seminar focused on how qualitative data may be used within transport modelling. ESRC, 2013.
HIA of Stockport’s Core Strategy
Working with NHS Stockport, the Health & Environment Advisor (Planning) undertook this HIA alongside other forms of appraisal, using a robust pro-forma designed by NHS Stockport’s HIA Team. The HIA is part of the Sustainability Appraisal. Stockport Council, 2010.
MHIA of use of arrests records in employment decisions: US
The specific question was: What is the impact on the mental health of a community when employers use arrest records in making employment decisions about members of that community?" The results of the MHIA indicated that proposed revisions to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Policy Guidance would have positive impacts on Chicago’s Englewood community. HIA of Doneraile Traveller accommodation proposal
An HIA of Cork County Council's (CCC) proposal to develop permanent and transient sites at Ballydineen. Evidence was collected on the potential health impacts from workshops, a literature review, and health profile. Recommendations related to the environment, safer neighbourhoods, community spirit, service provision, employment & local business opportunities and other issues. Dermot Glackin, HIA Ireland, 2008.
Global Burden of Disease Study, 2010
Life expectancy in the UK has improved over the last 20 years, but levels of ill health have not and the UK is now below average compared with 18 other countries on many important indicators. The Lancet. 2013.
ESRC Seminar 3: New modelling methods: what can qualitative data offer?
Includes 2 documents: “An Obesity and planning: workshop” report and a draft report, “The scope for tackling obesity in Medway through the built environment". The research report is a comprehensive review of current planning policy, evidence & opportunities, the workshop summarises the discussions based on this document. Health and Garden Cities: health benefits (TCPA)
A re-publication of the pamphlet on the health benefits of Garden Cities by Norman Macfadyen. The paper highlights the health benefits of Garden Cities, and makes the bold claim that at the time of original publication ‘our Garden City conditions [were] the healthiest known in this country’. Utopias in urban planning: Dreams and realities. 15 May, Stoke-on-Trent
Brian Jacobs, Emeritus Professor in Community Regeneration at Staffordshire University is giving an evening’s presentation on utopian dreams in planning. He will explore the legacy of garden cities, architectural modernism and the spread of suburbia in urban planning policy in the UK.

European Summer School in Evidence Based public Health, 1-5th July, Liverpool
Organised by the University of Liverpool. The Summer School is ideal for: Researchers; Mid-career professionals working in public health institutions; and Students undertaking a Masters in Public Health or Epidemiology. Spaces are limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
HIA 5 Day Training Course, 17th-21st June or 11 - 15th November, 2013, Liverpool
The Course is organised by IMPACT and is aimed at all those whose current and future work is likely to require an understanding of the theory and practice of health impact assessment. The course is for both commissioners, practitioners and those wishing to undertake HIAs. HEAT Tool for cycling & walking: online training: 24th May, 27th June, 16th July
WHO/Europe’s HEAT for walking and cycling is an online resource to estimate the economic savings resulting from reductions in mortality as a consequence of regular cycling or walking. Registration is required.
