Health is international, diesease knows no boundaries and many problems are shared across countries. NEPHO has the lead role for Europe and International issues. Most of the focus of the work of NEPHO on behalf of APHO has been in the context of the European Union.

The European Union has a formal 'competency' (or responsibility for improving the health of European citizens), it does not have a responsibility for healthcare - although this distinction is becoming blurred with the growth in cross border health care entitlements.

NEPHO has been involved with a number of projects funded by the public health programme of the European Union. The most notable project has been ISARE. This is a series of projects which has been striving to develop a database to allow health comparisons at a regional level, rather than at the more traditional level of countries.

In 2010 there will be the first publication of health profiles for all the regions of Europe where data are available.

As well as specific projects, there have been a growing number of international collaborations inlcuding international conferences. A particularly fruitful collaboration has been developed with Canadian colleagues.
